I paint because it’s as natural to me as breathi

I paint because it’s as natural to me as breathing. Yorkshire runs through my veins. It calls to me like an old, fierce love.

The moors, or as I call her my mistress, is my addiction. When I’m away from her there’s a longing that won’t ease. Like any great love affair we’ve seen the best and the worst in each other, the storms, the quiet moments, the wildness and the calm.

I keep painting not for fame or galleries but because the landscape speaks to my soul. It’s a part of me and through every brushstroke I’m trying to share that feeling, the raw, untamed heart of Yorkshire.

If you’ve ever stood on those open moors and felt something stirring deep inside you’ll know what I mean.

I wish to give thanks to @jameshardisty and Yorkshire Post for this wonderfully atmospheric image captured to celebrate 60 years as a professional artist. The light is magnificent and James is truly a master of his craft.

As we step into a new year, I’m not thinking abo

As we step into a new year, I’m not thinking about a new me, just new moments out on the moors.

In a world that rushes us along, the landscape has a way of steadying the mind if we let it.

Yorkshire is still there in all its drama and quiet beauty, free for us all to enjoy.

Wrap up warm, take a wander, and lose yourself in nature for a while … it’s where I always find my calm.

Here’s to 2026 a year shaped by fresh air, open skies and a renewed passion for the landscape.

After a few days of festivities, if you’re ready to stretch your legs and blow the cobwebs away, Holmfirth is the perfect place to wander. From the moors above the town to the cobbled back lanes below, there’s plenty to explore along with the independent shops and cafés that make this place what it is.

We’re open as normal today and up to New Year Eve, 11am to 4pm and look forward to welcoming you into the gallery.

As 2026 approaches, we would like to take a moment to thank you.
Whether you’ve visited the gallery, shared a kind word, or simply followed along from afar, your presence has been felt throughout the year. So many of you share the same passion for Yorkshire and its dramatic, emotive landscapes, and it is that connection that links us all, no matter where we may be.

As we look ahead, we wish you a Merry Christmas filled with calm moments and a New Year shaped by peace, good health and fresh inspiration.

Here’s to another year of celebrating Yorkshire together, its weathered edges, shifting skies and the spirit that keeps drawing us back.

The gallery will be closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, but we shall be open between Christmas and New Year for those who wish to wrap up and venture out into the landscape.

Where do the years keep disappearing to…

Those who know me will have heard me speak time and again about my lifelong love affair with Yorkshire, but the truth is, none of it would have been possible without Anne. Through all the knocks, the doubts and the turns in the road, she has been the steadying hand at my back. My anchor when I was drifting, the one who believed in me long before I learned to believe in myself.

We met as teenagers, and as this year draws to a close we mark 62 years of marriage. I still find myself shaking my head in quiet amazement at the life we’ve travelled together. In the early days it was Anne’s wage that kept us going, allowing me to take the leap into being a full time artist. She trusted that I could make something of my art and built foundations together.

Life has never been simple, but we’ve faced it side by side. I couldn’t have asked for a better companion, nor a truer friend. Together we’ve built a home, a life, a family… all from that single chance moment when I was sent to paint the art school gates and saw her walking by with her friends. A sliding doors instant that changed everything.

Thank you, Anne for your strength, your encouragement, and your unwavering love. I owe you more than words could ever capture.

White plains
The scene could not have been more perfect.The barn house stood in deep drifting snow on the ridge, silhouetted supremely on the skyline by the menacing swirling sky. As I put my first brush stroke on to the paper intuition told that this was going to work.
