I’ve spent countless hours on the Yorkshire moors, and the small moments I’ve witnessed along the way make me who I am today, the kind of beauty that doesn’t shout but stays with you long after you leave.

Wherever you are this weekend, take a breath and look around. There’s always something worth noticing.

“The face tells a story—if you take the time to look.”

On his fiftieth birthday, Sam Tonkiss (1909–1992) turned to clay, shaping a remarkable career as a portrait sculptor. I was fortunate to call him a friend—and privileged to have him sculpt my likeness, as he had done for Elgar, L.S. Lowry, and Khrushchev before me.

A portrait is never just a mirror image—it reflects how the artist sees you, capturing something deeper beneath the surface.

Looking at this sculpture now, I’m reminded how much we all grow into the faces we wear.

It truly has something for everyone and that’s before we even begin to mention the warm Yorkshire hospitality you will receive at the cafes, coffee shops, B&B, hotel and delis.

Thinking of a visit, well don’t forget to also allow time to explore a little out of the centre there are so many hidden gems, cobbled lanes, water troughs, an old jail ( yes you read that right) and then up on to the moors to see the breathtaking open panorama.

Easter by the Yorkshire Coast – A Timeless Scene

As the tides roll in and the spring sun casts its glow over Yorkshire’s rugged coastline, I’m reminded why I was drawn to Staithes. Nestled beneath the towering cliffs, this fishing village feels as though it belongs to the sea itself.

The white fishermen’s cottages, clustered like penguins braving the North Sea breeze, stood resilient against time and tide. It was a scene that demanded to be captured in watercolour, a moment of Yorkshire’s coastal soul preserved forever.

When we visit places like Staithes, we hold onto more than just the view, we carry the feeling of standing there, breathing in the salt air, watching the light dance on the water. That’s why I paint: to capture those fleeting moments so they can be revisited time and again.

If Staithes has left its mark on you, let this print be a way to keep that memory alive, a window back to the Yorkshire coast whenever you need it.

“I am not one for pretty pictures.”

Perhaps when I am long gone, this will be the quote I am remembered for, alongside my paintings. You will mostly find me in the gallery on a sunny day, but out on the moors when the weather is at its most inhospitable—for these are the days that captivate me. When all your senses are alive, what you see is only part of the painting; the rest comes from within.

Watercolour Sketches is a collection of my raw drawings, accompanied by my thoughts and feelings. My sketchbook is my diary, a place where I record my relationship with the Yorkshire landscape. These sketches were never meant for anything other than my personal recollections, yet years later, I can return to them and step back into that very moment—the weather, the sounds, the scent of the moors as vivid as the day I stood there.

“Capturing Moments in Monochrome: A Journey with Denis Thorpe”

Throughout the 1970s, I had the privilege of being photographed by the renowned photojournalist Denis Thorpe. Beginning his career at the Mansfield Reporter in 1948, Denis’s passion for storytelling through images led him to esteemed positions at the Daily Mail and later as a staff photographer for The Guardian from 1974 to 1996.

Residing in Stockport since the 1960s, Denis has predominantly worked in monochrome, mastering the art of black and white film photography. His dedication to the craft is evident in his meticulous darkroom processes, which have resulted in evocative images that stand the test of time.

In 2010, to commemorate my 70th birthday exhibition, “Power and the Passion,” held at The Mall Galleries in London and Temple Newsam in Leeds, Denis once again captured my likeness. This time, we ventured beyond industrial landscapes to the open moors. Swipe to the end to see Denis in action on the Isle of Skye above Holmfirth.

This is me and my mum, Dulcie – looking every inch a Hollywood star. She was only a child herself when she gave birth to me in Penang, Malaya.

Life changed drastically with the fall of Singapore during the Second World War. My father was shot into his own grave by the Japanese, and my mother remarried a Yorkshire man. That journey brought us to Huddersfield—my first home in England—before we settled in Barnsley.

Looking back, I realise how much strength it must have taken for her to carry on. Mothering is not just about the soft moments—it’s about resilience, sacrifice, and doing the best you can in the face of hardship.

I am reminded not only of my mother’s strength but also of the other women who helped shape my path. It was in Barnsley that my love for art was first recognised. Miss Netherwood, my art teacher at Holyrood Catholic School, saw potential in my sketches and encouraged me to pursue it further. Outside the classroom, Miss Hayden, a retired art teacher and owner of the local art shop, became a mentor—guiding me and recognising something within my paintings. It was in her shop that I would buy paints, and in her encouragement, I found both a tutor and a supporter.

On Mothering Sunday, I reflect on the women who shape us—not just mothers, but those who nurture, guide, and believe in us when it matters most.

The rain will wet you
The sun will burn you
The wind will chill you
But only people will make you cry…

That is why I remain so in love with the moorland uplands of Yorkshire—God’s Own County.
