It’s 2 years since the frame was installed at Wessenden Head, Marsden Moor

Marsden Moor April 13th 2016

Today the frame at Marsden Moor celebrates its 2nd Birthday since its installation on the 14th April 2014 and we couldn’t be prouder. Foot prints surround the base of the frame where others have stood to enjoy the view and the sound of the curlews. At this time of the year the frame really harmonises with the moorland landscape, but the clarity of the blue sky just seemed to bring it all to life. A big thank you to the National Trust and the University of Huddersfield  for working in partnership with us and to Walker Morris for sponsorship of this frame but most of all to everyone who has supported the idea and ethos of the frame – our intention is to be respectful of the landscape whilst sharing our passion for education and enjoyment.

Ashley Jackson as a young man on what he wanted to paint

Hear and see Yorkshire artist Ashley Jackson, founder of ‘Framing the landscape’ explain his passion for art and Yorkshire as a young man.

Now at 75 years old the message is still the same, if you have a talent for art, determination will see you succeed.Just keep going ….

Inspiring School children to frame the landscape at Roseberry Topping

Ashley Jackson takes masterclass in Newton Wood with children from Brotton

Wedneday 16th March was a  very special day, as Yorkshire watercolour artist Ashley Jackson undertook a master class with a difference. Children from St Peter’s C of E school Brotton joined Ashley in Newton Wood at the location of the fifth installed ‘Framing the Landscape’ frames to see how an artist can utilise a frame to focus on a particular area of the landscape, in this case the iconic Roseberry Topping.

Sketching away

As Ashley explained throughout the outdoor art class,’ As an artist I have been fortunate to view the moors with an honest clarity, the drama of the sky with an approaching storm, the crispness of fresh fallen snow under foot or the damp chill of drizzling rain. The landscape is more than a passing view from a car window it is our heritage, culture and more personally it forms part of our thoughts and feelings. There is so much for us to appreciate, enjoy, embrace and be inspired by, if we choose to see’

Although the weather was overcast it was a fantastic day, to see the children enthusiastic not only in the way they approached their own sketching but also in their enthusiasm for the landscape, which is most important for they will be the next guardians entrusted with the protecting the land once we are gone

Grand Central Rail as sponsor of the frame at Roseberry Topping, provided further support with hospitality for the children at a local farm tearoom.

Whilst Area Ranger for the National Trust at Roseberry Topping, Gareth Wilson who was also present at the masterclass added,’ We’re hoping the project’s education programme will inspire the next generation, helping us to engage with possible future volunteers and conservationists’.

The children were a credit to the school and their parents and did not allow the weather to dampen their spirit or creativity.

What a difference a day makes … Holme Moss

Holme Moss Frame by Sandie Nicholson

What a difference a day makes, fantastic image of the snow covered frame at Holme Moss taken  this weekend by Sandie Nicholson, appearing on Calendar ITV weather with Jon Mitchell on Monday evening.

Think  there might be plenty more snow to come, but the Moss does look stunningly beautiful at present with its white covering giving the landscape a romantic feel like a soft white wedding dress. You don’t have to travel to the top of the Moss even standing in the valley of Holmfirth and looking up still creates a “wow” feeling for those who don’t wish to venture up the icy road.

New Year, New Start

We hope that as the days get lighter it will encourage more people to get outside and view the landscape. It certainly has a way of making you feel up lifted, standing high on the moors with the cold wind in your face and the wet ground beneath your feet.

Please do send us your views of the landscapes that you enjoy, they could be our next inspiration for a frame …

May Ashley and I wish you a Happy New Year and inspired walking amongst the Yorkshire moorland, woodland, coast and Dale.

To Scale frame gifted to Ashley Jackson on his 75th birthday

SONY DSC

Here is Ashley Jackson at the Technical studios, the University of Huddersfield, School of Computing and Engineering being presented with a scaled down version of the Frame that is now installed in five unique locations across Yorkshire.

The plaque in its centre is removal so that the landscape can still be framed through the aperture.

Richard, Dennis, Andrew and Steve have all played a massive role in the construction of the frames and it is a great honour for me to collect the inscribed frame to have within the Ashley Jackson Gallery in Holmfirth.
Thank you also to Prof Donnelly and VC Prof Bob Cryan for working in partenership on Framing the Landscape.

Also not forgetting Morley Brothers who provided the welding skills.

A massive thank you, it will have pride of place
